Seattle: The Rut Race | Kit Engwall

Seattle is just 3 hours north for me so I hit the road Friday night to get a jump on Saturday mornings traffic.  A handful of my privateer buddies such as Collin Jurin, Mike Horban, Chris Howell, Greg Crater, Jake Anstett, and Austin Ullrich, all hailing from the NW, arrived on Thursday anxiously awaiting their chance to race supercross.

Austin Ullrich grew up racing dirt bikes, he raced Loretta's as a mini rider and has since raced 250 & 450A locally with great results.  Last summer he raced his first ever Outdoor national at Washougal, and this past weekend he got his first Supercross under his belt.

I had a chance to talk with Austin and his mechanic Jason McCormick, it was really something special.  The pros mention being nervous sometimes, but what we forget about is the rest of the team, like the parents and sponsors.  Austin's dad told me he couldn't sleep all week and was shaking with excitement on Friday morning, his son was about to race his first ever professional level supercross race.  This was a huge step forward for all of them.  His goal? To make the night show, which he did.  He ended up 13th in 250 heat 1, and learned that LCQ's are pretty gnarly.  The following companies helped turn his dream into reality: Beaverton Honda, JMR Suspension, his mom & dad, Motocross Direct, Fusion Graphix, Auzzi Clothing, MSR, and Spy.

Motosport.com NWNMXS Post Show | Woodland round 5

A wet and muddy race track, but everyone still had a blast at Woodland MX Park for round five of the Motosport.com NWNMX series presented by Rockstar.  It was a double point Saturday only race to make up the weekend. Over 300 entry's made up the day of racing up at Woodland.  The series moves northeast to Airway Motocross Park outside of Spokane, Wa next on May 18th and 19th for rounds 6 and 7.

Kit Engwall | Motosport.com NWNMXS Photo Report | HRMC Round 3 and 4

This past weekend Horn Rapids Motorsports Complex saw racing from rounds 3 & 4 of the Motosport.com NW National MX Series Presented by Rockstar. There was a surprise Saturday morning seeing the likes of Tommy Weeck take to the track on a bike he had not even ridden yet, that was set up for Weston Peick. Needless to say he adapted quickly and rode in typical Tommy Weeck fashion, pinned.

The A class had plenty of excitement throughout the weekend, It was a 4 way battle at times. Weeck, Huffman, & Wardius were all great on starts, while other riders had more speed in sections it made for exciting racing. In the 250 class it was Wardius taking the lead with Weeck challenging for passes. In the 450 class it was the opposite, Huffman was a little off pace and settled in the top 5, Noah McConahy rode great all weekend. He was suffering from less than ideal starts though. When you have riders Sprinting their first few laps it can be quite difficult to catch back up and challenge for the lead when you have a few fast guys to get by first, he eventually would get a decent start on Sunday and was catching Weeck but suffered from a rear flat and took a soil sample. Unfortunately the next 450 A moto we saw the same thing happen, only this time it was Weeck that would go down and DNF, the win would go to Noah McConahy.

Motosport.com NWNMXS Post Show | HMRC Rounds 3 and 4

It was a great weekend of racing for rounds 3 and 4 of the Motosport.com NWNMXS presented by Rockstar.  Cold practice laps made for some heated afternoon motos as it was great spring northwest weather.  Over 800 race entry's for the weekend as the series ended its four round stop at HRMC.  All of us at Motothenw.com cant wait to be back next year.  The series moves to Woodland, Washington on April 13 to race a double point round at Woodland MX Park.  Don't forget to mark your calendars.
